Barrackpore Angel India Foundation is a registered NGO working for quality education of youth and children; Women Empowerment and for disabled persons. URAAN: Uraan is a project, which provides free coaching for preparation of WBJEE/Medical, Polytechnic and Competitive Examinations to poor and backward students of rural areas (specially Tribal areas), who cannot afford to study at towns paying lump sum to commercial coaching centers. Only for lack of proper guidance, these students in spite of being in reserved categories miss the opportunity to leave their dismal lives. A study in 2009 in Bandowan, a socially and economically backward tribal region which suffered a lot between fighting of Security forces and Maoists, revealed that, not a single student of this region was admitted in the Bandowan Polytechnic College, for they didn’t came in rank in entrance examination. A further enquiry revealed the sheer lack of motivation among students for appearing for premium WBJEE/Medical or IAS/WBCS like examinations. The story was simple: they become graduates to be unemployed. Angel India Foundation started ‘Uraan’ in a school premise in 2009 at Bandowan. With the support of locals and teachers, we were successful to encourage students to appear ‘big’ examinations. The first batch provided 13 successful students in WBJEE & Polytechnic. We received huge appreciation from locals and administration for our success and endeavor in successive batches too. Till now 34 students have succeeded under this project. This year, in 3rd batch (2012-13) preparation for Competitive Exams has also been included and the number of enrolled students rose up to 45. SETU: Taking 40 children, whose poor / daily working parents were unable to send them in standard schools for higher school fees, we started this project in Barrackpore in 2009, which provides remedial classes of Mathematics and English with the recreational activities at free of cost to these children. This became instant popular among locals, who provided spaces for classes and others. The local church also sent volunteers for teaching. Now we are planning to include professionals like Child Psychiatrists, Consultants etc and modern equipment like computers, toys etc for better nourishment of children. SRISTI: A group of 35 poor and unemployed women, who have been provided Tailoring classes by Angel India Foundation at free of cost for their self-reliability. Running at our office building in Barrackpore, Kolkata it is a potential project. Further, a group of 10 women among 35 are being provided advanced training like Boutique, Stitching, Jorry etc. The formation of an SHG with capital help from Bank is also being considered seriously. DISABLED CAMP: Around 250 disabled persons have so far received aids and equipment at free of cost from Angel India Foundation through a Disabled Camp organized in the interior of Bandowan, a tribal and disturbed area with help from ALIMCO, Kanpur and Purulia Protibondhi Kalyan Samiti. The next going to be organized at Raipur, Bankura after Panchayat poll of West Bengal.
