DR NORMAN BETHUNE MEMORIAL BLOOD DONORS ASSOCIATION Major Activities and Achivements

In the background of acute shortage of blood in the district of Nadia and adjoining areas of West Bengal Dr. Normal Bethune Memorial Blood Donors Association was established mainly to solve this problem. The main aim was to formulate and implement suitable programmes and measures to reach a situation where no life would be lost in this area for want of blood. During last 7 years we have organised 131 voluntary blood donation camps in which nearly 5000 units of blood were collected. Blood donated in these camps were entirely supplied to the Govt Blood banks only so that the same could reach the deserved persons. These camps, organised at different locations on one hand helped us in getting new (first time) donors, on the other hand build up a strong pool of regular donors. The credit cards received against these donations were distributed amongst the patient or patient parties who in exchange of these cards were able to get blood from the Govt. Blood Banks at free of cost.Apart from this in numerous occasion members of the organisation participated in direct blood donation i.e. on being requisitioned they visited different Hospitals, Clinics and donated blood as per requirement of specified group. By this way we have saved life of patients having rare negative groups. The association also organised awareness programme amongst the masses for promoting voluntary blood donation and to remove various misconceptions & taboos. Arranged special classes at different schools on blood science with special emphasis on blood donation to build up future donors. Conducted seminars & workshops on different issues wherein eminent speakers rendered their valuable lectures on various related topics. Organised free medical camps. On a no. of occasions met officials of health administration including Chief Medical Officer of Health, Hospital Superintendent etc., submitted memorandum, deputation on various issues with concrete positive proposals and suggestions on policy matter and urged them to implement those to make activities of blood bank transparent and citizen friendly. People from every walks of life, whenever felt any difficulty in getting blood for saving lives of their dear ones, approach this organisation and suitable arrangements are made to redress their requirement. Through the service rendered for the cause of humanity by its dedicated members this organisation has won the hearts of hundreds of citizens of this area.
