Major Activities and Achivements

Hamsa Organisation of Social Services Society ever since its inception in 2003 has been involved with health and development activities aimed especially at poorer section of the society. The Society undertakes many activities at the grassroots level on matters related to health and development. Awareness building sessions on health & hygiene, water & sanitation, communicable/infectious diseases and their prevention, prevention of the spread of HIV/AIDS, women and child health, nutrition, eye illnesses and their prevention/ treatment are being organized aimed at school teachers, ICDS personnel, health workers, auxiliary nurse midwives, school children, parents and youth. General and specialist health camps are also being conducted In line with the objectives of the organization it took up eye health care services program under the (Medak) District Blindness Control Society in the late 2003. It started its eye health care activities in Narsapur and surrounding areas. As it gained experience in the field, focusing specifically on cataract surgeries, it obtained permission from the authorities to initiate such health programs in Siddipet a major Taluka of the same district in early 2007. Similarly it expanded its eye health care programs to Peddapally Taluka of Karimnagar District of Andhra Pradesh also in early 2007. An associate institution of the Society, which is a 20 bed hospital and catering to the health care needs of the people in and around Narsapur Taluk is recognized by the District Blindness Control Society as a base hospital for performing cataract surgeries. Its facilities are being utilized for the purpose of performing surgeries on persons coming from Narsapur and surrounding Taluks. The facilities at the Community Health Centres of the Government of Andhra Pradesh in Siddipet and Peddapply are being utilized by the Society for performing cataract surgeries. The Society has the required number of staff for implementing the Blindness Control Program. It regularly organizes eye screening camps at various villages for the purposes of identifying cataract cases. Its team carries out counseling of cataract affected persons in regard to the treatment option available to them. The benefits of undergoing surgery and the risks involved with it are explained to the affected persons during counseling. The necessary follow up of patients after surgery are carried out. The Society has performed more than 17000 cataract surgeries during the last five and half years of its starting the eye health care services initiative. Student eye screening programs are also being conducted by the Society in various schools in the rural areas. The program include identification of cases of eye illnesses among the student community, talks on eye health, distribution of spectacle lenses to the needy children free of charge and advisory services to those children and their parents who require expert attention.
