AchieveMents: ICCW,TN started in 1953 works for child survival, development, protection and participation with a holistic approach of strengthening families and communities. There is branch in every District of Tamil Nadu with the Collector as President and a Committee of Official and non Official Members.
Programmes include Prevention of Female Infanticide and empowerement of women and girls in Madurai District. Achievement- From 200 infanticides recorded in 1988 to nil in 2001.
Programmes for prevention and rehabilitation of Child Labour in match and beedi industry in Virudhunagar and Vellore Districts. Achievement- Stoppage of bonded labour system in Beedi industry. Now Phase II of projects focusing on vocational training through educational sponsorship(Vellore) and Community College ( Srivilliputhur).
Programmes for Child Protection:
Crisis Intervention Centre for prevention, rescue, rehabilitation and after care of child abuse and neglect
Childline 1098 a 24 hour toll free number for children in distress at Chennai (South)and Cuddalore.
Project for identification and rehabilitation of Child Beggars at Chennai
Training of Multidisciplinary professionals to respond to child abuse cases
Training of Watchdog Committees in Panchayats for prevention of trafficking of children
Established a Network of NGOs in 32 Districts of Tamil Nadu for Child Protection.
Workshops for Stakeholders on Child Protection in all districts of Tamil Nadu with Government appropriate authorities and NGOs
Workshops for children on Child Rights and Protection in all Districts and State Level.
Residential Institutions for children at Chennai, Thiruvallur and Thanjavur Districts for destitute and hearing impaired children.
Community Based services:
Creches for children of working women ââ¬â 147 (2009) in the State.
Financial Sponsorship Support to families for care and education of children to prevent child labour or Institutionalisation.
Counselling and Guidance for Special Needs children. ICCW,TN provides psychological and financial assistance for physically and mentally challenged children and their families. Services include awareness, identification of disabilities, referral and counselling services.
Training:-
Training of Child Care Workers is a core activity of ICCW,TN. Training of Balasevikas, Anganwadi workers, etc has been done since 1962. The Training of Supervisors for ICDS Programme through out Tamil Nadu is done by ICCWTN since 1985.
Short Term Training Workshops for Teachers, Creche Workers and others are conducted on various child related issues ââ¬â Preschool Education, Nutrition, Child Protection etc.
Community Colleges at Chennai and Srivilliputhur have been started to offer Job oriented Training such as Computer Hardware, Child care, Fashion Designing, etc to disadvantaged Youth.
Adoption Services ââ¬â ICCWTN acts as a consultant to the Courts in Tamil Nadu who forward applications for Adoption of a child, whether In country or Inter country, for scrutiny and comments by the Council.
The Information, Documentation and Research Centre of the Council undertakes various studies on child centred issues which include An analysis of the State Budget and Expenditure on Children 1998 -2004, A study of children placed in Indian Adoption, etc. It also documents and publishes reference books such as ââ¬ÅChild and Law in Indiaââ¬Â a compilation of all laws concerning children, a Directory of Child Welfare Institutions in Tamil Nadu.
