JUBILEE PARK CENTRE FOR ALTERNATIVE RESEARCH IN DEVELOPMENT Major Activities and Achivements

Centre for Alternative Research in Development (CARID) was established in 1993 and registered in 1995-96 under Society Registration Act by a group of researchers and academicians attached to different institutes and universities in India and belonging to different disciplines. It was established mainly to undertake a) Research and Study including evaluation study b) Organize Workshop, Seminar, Lecture c) Publication d) initiate developmental activities particularly for disadvantaged people. CARID has also collaborated with other organizations/institutes to organise the above activities. KEY AREAS A)Human Rights and Peace: Children, Women, Indigenous People and their Cultures, Poor, the displaced, and Refugees. B)Education: Literacy, Human Resource Development, Awareness Programmes, Training Programmes. C)Health and Environment: Population control, AIDS, Drug Addiction, Environmental Degradation. D)Democracy and Peace: Study of the Election Processes. E) Economic support mainly through SHGs. ACTIVITIES CARID has initiated some research projects/ evaluation studies which were supported by research bodies like ICSSR, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India to examine the problem of educational development of SC/ST population, to study the problem of the aged. CARID is working on some research projects pertaining to child education, women self help groups, environment, health, AIDS and population control. CARID has conducted group discussion, youth programmes on human rights and youth workshops and its members participated as election observer in South and South-East Asian countries like Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Thailand, Cambodia etc. Members of CARID have participated in seminars, conferences, training programmes, workshops organized by different agencies of national and international repute in India and abroad. CARID members also have experience in the education of street children. CARID organized workshop on Peace, Human Rights and Conflict Resolution. Major Achievements: CARID or its members have initiated a number of studies, published books or articles, organized seminars/workshops/lectures and initiated development activities. Some of them, particularly related to education or evaluation studies are as follows: a) Reasons of Disparity in Sex Ratio at Primary Education Level, ICSSR Project,-a Study conducted on 16 villages in West Bengal, Published-Faltering First Step, Cosmo Publications, New Delhi. b) Some Aspects of Old Age Problems among the Slum Dwellers in Calcutta sponsored by ICSSR. c) Problems of Educational Development in Rural Areas, Govt. of India Project. d) Educational Development of Scheduled Tribes in West Midnapore District, W.B., ICSSR Project. e) Evaluation of activities of Asian Community Health Action Network (ACHAN) f) Problems of Educational Development of Women, under UGC DSA Programme (Published- Development of Education in South Asia: Entitlement of Women) g) Educational Development Programme for First Generation Learners with special reference to Scheduled Tribes, sponsored by Asian Resources Foundation, since 2003 till now-project areas in two backward SC/ST dominated rural areas of West Bengal. h) Flood and Cyclone affected areas in Bangladesh and appropriate strategy, study sponsored by Swiss Red Cross. i) Evaluation of Post Matric Scholarship programme for SC students in Tripura and Sikkim, study sponsored by Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt. of India. j) Survey of Tribal Culture in West Bengal sponsored by Govt. of West Bengal.
