Mewat Development Society Key Issues and Operational Areas, Major Activiities & Achivements

Operational Districts: Mewat

Operational States: HARYANA

AchieveMents: Mewat, named after its dominant people, Meos, is a socio-cultural region spread over contiguous parts of Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. They are also sizeably spread over to other parts of the country such as MP, Gujrat and Maharashtra. Though the Meo community had significantly contributed to the national freedom movement yet it by and large remained backward even after independence. A group of social activists of Mewat, working in diverse fields, joined hands on voluntary basis, to fight against the backwardness in the rural areas. Consequently, among other efforts, one such effort was formal registration of the Mewat Development Society in 1987 under societies’ Registration Act 1860 and is now working in different states and Union Territories of India. It’s also registered under FCRA and is also life member of Confederation of NGOs of Rural India. The main thrust of MDS are to promote charitable values, arts and literature, culture, education and science and technology for the welfare of the people; to conduct research studies on application of science, technology in relation to education, social, economic cultural, regional and environmental aspects; to undertake sponsored contract and consultancy jobs on behalf of private, govt. and non govt. agencies and international bodies; to undertake educational, training and awareness programmes for human resource development; to provides relief, medical and legal aid as well as other assistance to the weaker sections of people as part of the efforts of empowering them, etc. MDS has different specialised capabilities. It has skilled workers to carry out activities like surveys, studies and field work and developed a network of high level specialists in the different areas including science and technology studies, action research on technology delivery system for rural workers, particularly artisans, craftsmen and entrepreneurships development and application of geoinformatics including geographic information system, global positioning system and remote sensing. It has developed specialised capabilities in socio economic studies on land use/land cover, environmental issues, healthcare, education, energy, planning and rural development. It has also developed expertise in creation of computerised databases, mapping and customised software generation and organising training for elected representatives of Panchayati Raj System. MDS has conferred fellowships and awards to promising young students, particularly Mewati women for pursuing higher technical education. The writers, poets, singers, artists, educationists, researchers, social activities, public representatives, civil servants etc. were also considered for excellence awards by MDS.
