AchieveMents: A BRIEF REPORT OF THE ACTIVITIES
OF
SOCIETY FOR EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT
The Society for Education and Development is non-profit organization established to extend a helping hand to the underprivileged sections of the society particularly rural Villages,urban slums and tribal areas.
Vision:
SED envisages for itself a role of a Resource centre for integrated education of Adults/youth and children, bringing the concerns of health, life skills and livelihood.
Mission:
Provide Contextually relevant support to community based initiatives for quality of life through education/training and advocacy.
Objectives :
1. To serve the community irrespective of caste, creed, religion in the context of their family coming for their education and Development
2. To develop alternative models/ strategies for implementation of education and development programmes
3. To organize the training to the functionaries of various levels involved in the education and development programmes
4. To prepare teaching/ training materials needed for the projects of education and development programmes
5. To coordinate the agencies concerned in education and development projects at the field level.
6. To undertake such activities and programmes are consonant with the above objectives of the society
Area of operation
The office is functioning at Chennai having field office at vandavasi block, Thiruvannmalai District. The major programmes and activities organized at vandavasi block, Thiruvannamali District.However, the programmes/Activities also organized in the districts of Kanceepuram,thiruvallur and Vellore.
Field Programmes and Activities:
Self Help groups
At present 120 Self help groups are functioning with the support of Society. Apart from the savings, availing of the loan, repayment SHG members are engaged in vocational training by individual and groups through that they are earning an average of Rs- 4000 to 5000 per month individually.
Adolescents Groups
There are 40 Adolescent groups functioning actively at present. Each group consists of 20 ââ¬â 25 members. There are 30 groups for girls and 10 groups for boys. Periodical training such as Leadership, communication and Life skills organized for these groups. These groups are involved in organizing awareness programmes, besides their routine activities of the groups.
Supplementary Education Centers
There are five supplementary education Centers functioning from the year 2002.These centers functioning in the evenings 6.00 pm to 8.00 pm. These centre are functioning as Tution centers for school going children and non-formal education center for out of school children. These centers are managed by the volunteer teachers appointed on honorarium basis. On an average 150 to 200 children in the age group of 6-14 are benefited through this programme.
Training/ Awareness programmes
From the beginning, this agency involved in organizing the training programmes for School teachers, Non-formal Education instructors SHG groups based on the demand at the field level. Besides the staff SED are participating as Resource persons in the training Programmes organized by other institutions/agencies. In addition to the above Awareness Meetings/ Trainings are also organized on Health, Legal, RTE. RTI etc periodically at frequent intervals. Besides, important days like Republic day, Independence Day Children day etc. In each programme 200-300 participants attends this type of programmes.
Crèche for Children
Crèche for Children in the age group of 3-5 years run by the Society since 2005.Through this Crèche every year 25-30 Children are benefited. This Crèche is managed by One teacher assisted by one assistant cum cook. This scheme is fully funded by TamilNadu Social welfare Board Govt. of TamilNadu
