The Society took up the publishing of Down To Earth magazine (DTE) as its first task. The Society’s founders perceived both a need and space for an in-depth news magazine on environment and development that would not only cover policy issues but also the efforts of ordinary people to manage their natural resource base. In addition, there was also the need to disseminate a Southern perspective on global environmental negotiations. In addition to the research inputs of its reporters, DTE also has the backing of CSE programme research staff in addition to CSE’s comprehensive Library on Environmental Resources. The CSE library distributes a daily bulletin of key environmental events to all DTE reporters and editors, which it collates and abstracts from more than 80 newspapers and newsmagazines which are scanned, classified and keyworded every day. These news abstracts are the basic source of information that catalyse discussions during the daily news meetings. CSE library also provides Audio-Visual resources to the magazine’s photo editors. Down To Earth Website was launched in May 1992, as a separate edition of Down To Earth magazine. Over the Years, this site has undergone significant design and structural changes in order to make it more organised and sustainable over the long run, when more growth is expected. The DTE website is fully interactive through various features such as social media, multimedia etc.
