Aarohi was set up with a vision to create opportunities for rural communities in the mountains of Uttarakhand to lead a more self-dependent existence, reduce poverty, and live in harmony with their environment. Background Information: In the year 1992 , a young couple, enamored with the Himalayas , took a decision to base themselves in the charming village of Satoli and dedicate their lives to the development of the region . This was the beginning of Aarohi…….a term from Indian Classical Music signifying ascendance, growth or inclusion… of thought, creativity and harmony. Positive action has, to date, touched lives of some 50000 people from over 100 villages in three of the 13 districts of Uttarakhand . Various issues of poverty have been addressed through sectoral inputs in Health Care, Education, Livelihood, Forest Management, Drinking Water and Sanitation, Watershed Management and Women’s Development. The organization began with a dream and no financial reserve and has now grown to a team of 69 full time workers and 279 members from all over the world. Current Focus Areas of Work Health Enhancing access to healthcare and promotion of positive health seeking behavior have been major areas of focus since the inception of the organization. Within these, the reduction of maternal and child morbidity and mortality has been the primary objective. For the last 18 years, the health program has worked to achieve these goals through the training of village level health workers and traditional birth attendants, raising the level of awareness of critical health issues with women’s groups, adolescents and children, and delivery of medical and surgical care through a state of the art cottage hospital. Education Aarohi supports a middle level school, the Aarohi Bal Sansar (ABS) with a current student strength of 160. The school seeks to impart meaningful education to children which gives them confidence to choose appropriate vocations in life, and also become responsible citizens of their society. Special focus on all round development of children is given through the teaching of environmental education, health awareness, computer literacy, music, dance and sport. The education program also reaches out to some 1500 children of Government schools in the area through interventions in health and environment education, sport and preservation of local culture. Eighty seven children are being currently supported through various scholarship programs, to pursue their study, career objectives and extra curricular talent. Livelihood The livelihood program of Aarohi covers two streams of work. The Apricot Grower’s Initiative produces a body care range that involves the collection of Apricot & Peach nuts/kernels for processing and marketing of their oils and scrubs and also production of handmade soaps. The Herb Grower’s Venture encourages farmers from the region to cultivate culinary herbs, which are dried in a central facility and then marketed. Benefit has reached around 1000 farmers from Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. The two ventures had a financial outlay of INR 28.44 lacs in the financial year 2009 – 2010.
