Estlabished in 1990, as a volentory social service organization for promotion and protection of consumer rights and interest of 16 lakh rural and urban population of Alipurduar Sub-Division of Jalpaiguri District in North Bengal, borading Bhutan in the North and Assam in the East, majority of whom belong to Scheduled Caste, Schduled Tribes and other backword communities, Alipurduar Consumers’ Protection Society got itself duly registered with the Registrar of Societies, West Bengal in February , 1996 under the West Bengal Act XXVI of 1961. Subsecuently, the objectives of the society have been expended by incorporating the provession for protection and empowerment of humen, youths, students and elderly persons. Working for the cause of women, youths students and elderly persons in general and the consumers in perticular during these two decades, the society has been a Non-profit, non-proprietory, non-political and non-govt. social service organization and it serve the general masses without making any distinction of caste, creed, colour and religion. Affiliated to Federation of Consumer Associations , West Bengal (FCAWB) since 1995 and our president is the North Bengal Chairman of the FCAWB. We have also set up six block level units at Alipurduar – I, Alipurduar – II, Falakata, Madarihat-Birpara, Kalchini and Kumargram, for effectively serving the rural population. Recognised by the Nehru Yuva Kendra, Jalpaiguri District Unit and by the State and Central Govt., Our Society is representrd as Member-Organization on the State Consumer Protection Council, Kolkata and District Consumer Protection Council, Jalpaiguri and on Divisional Railway Users’ consultative Committee of North-East Frontier Rly at Alipurduar Junction and on the project Steering Committee of the Buxa Tiger Reserve. Our Representatives attendeed the National Consumer Convention organized by Consumer Co-ordination Council twice at New Delhi and once at Kolkata. We also persuaded the State Govt. to set up Alipurduar Circuit Bench of District Consumer Redressal Forum in September 2001. We have so far successfully organized many empowerment and awareness programmes, ithe importants ones being Central Govt. (CA Department) sponsored Consumer Awareness Programmes for students and teacher, State Govt. (C.A Department) sponsored Consumer Convention for six North Bengal Districts, two CUTS sponsored Awareness Programmes on DRUGS & GRANITE, and SEBI/BSE Sponsored Investment Awareness Programme etc. Jointly with Alipurduar Municipality every year, we observe National Consumer Day in last week of December and World Consumer Rights day in 3rd week of March. Till date we have handle over 1000 onsumer complaints and helped settlement of 900 cases at our initiative and filed remaining 100 cases to onsumer courts for decitions. We are commited to work for protection of interests of and for empowerment of students, youths, wemen and elderly persons, with the help and assistance from the Govt. and other agencies as may be available.
