Major Activities and Achivements

CCHESS is a grass root level NGO having nearly two decades of experience in addressing the sustainable livelihood issues of farmers and farm labourers in Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu.It was started by the retired teacher Mr.A.Jegarayan,the founder secretary in 1992. The Mission of CCHESS: " pilotting the community based replicable capacity building models for promoting Sustainable Development in accordance with Agenda 21 and 3 Rio Conventions(UNCCD,UNFCCC,UNCBD) and contributing considerably for accomplishing the 8 Millennium Development Goals of United Nations and Indian National Priorities". Major Achivement-Participating in UN organised Conferences: The year 2006 was declared by UN as the "International year of deserts and desertification"(IYDD) and so UN organised many International Conferences.One such conference was organised by UNESCO in collaboration with other UN and International Agencies on "International Scientific Conference on Desertification and Drylands Research" at Tunis Tunisia between 19 and 21 June 2006.The concept paper submitted by our Programme Director Mr.J.Justin pious was chosen by the 12 member scientific committee comprising the internationally recognised dryland Scientists for presentation in the conference under the session "Education and Knowledge Sharing in Drylands".The topic of the presentation was "Innovations of Indian NGO in building the Capacity of People inhabiting the Drylands". Since CCHESS has transferred the copyright free of cost to UNESCO the full paper was published in the book titled "The Future of Drylands".This book has been published in Internet also by the publisher Springer Netherlands. Further CCHESS partcipated in e-forum oragnised by UNCCD as a preparation for the conference "Civil society Desrtification" at Montipellier,France. Major activities funded by Donors: The Community owned Integrated watershed Development Projects: At present CCHESS is implementing NABARD funded watershed development project in accordance with bottom up approach advocated by UNCCD.The cost of the project is 60 lakhs.This project is explained in the above mentioned concept paper. CCHESS has already completed 8 watershed development projects under "National Watershed Development Project for Rainfed Areas"(NWDPRA) funded by the Ministry Of Agricultutre,Government of India.The cost of the project is 1 crore and 80 lakhs. Organic farming Project: This project was funded under "Advancement of Rural Technology Scheme"(ARTS) of "Council for Advancement of People s Action and Rural Technology (CAPART).We identified 50 progressive farmers and provided training on vermicompost preparation and the procedures of applying the same in their lands.All the 50 farmers have been organised under Organic farmers Association.
