Gandhi kalaimanram Library was founded by Sri P.S.Kumarasamy raja, Freedom fighter, Former Chief Minister of Madras and Former Governer of Orissa, at his residence was inaugurated by Dr.Rajendra Prasad, the First President of India on 16.11.1955. Sri P.S.Kumarasamy Raja donated his residence to the public and since then it has been functioning well and useful for the public. There are many Books numbering more than fifty thousand in various language such as Tamil, English, Hindi, Sanskrit, Telegu Kannada and Malayalam available in this library.Books have been classified as per the methodology given by Sri S.R.Renganathan, the father of Library Science. There are 4000 members at present. The books are being lent to the men and women approximately 150 per day, who take the books to their home and return on due dates. ie within 15 days- about 200 members are benefited daily under this category. As there are many books belonging to earlier publications and which are revelevent to the M.Phil and Ph.D research topics in various fields. The research scholors used to come to library for collecting the source material for their respective topics. Pandit Jawarlal Nehru Mandapam, a seperate building of Gandhi Kalaimandram Library reading room where the public come and read the journals regularly, such readers are not less than 300 per day. There are more than 60 journals both Tamil and English kept for reading Daily, Weekly, fortnightly and Monthly. Apart from this, rare back volumes of Sudhandra Sangu, Ananda Bodini, Senthamizh Selvi are avilable here for the research scholors. Sri N.K.Ramaraja Auditorium located within the campus of the Gandhi Kalaimandram Library place where dramas, literary meetings and music performance are being performed. The prominent and reputed literary organisations such as Kamban Kazham, Manimekalai Mandram, Bharathi Mayyam, Sekizhar Mandram and Muthamizh Mandram conduct their regular meetings in the Ramaraja auditorium. Since the Gandhi Kalaimanram is located at the heart fo the city, many school functions like annual Day Celebrations are being conducted. Because of the successful functions and meetings conducted in the field of art, literature and drama whichh foster the culural heritage, naturally Gandhi Kalaimanram stands a reputed institution throughout the southern districts of Tamilnadu. The research scholors and professors of various universities utilise this library for their research and have adm8ired at its service to the public. They praise that they come to know for the first time in the Tamilnadu that they have not seen such a private library like Gandhi Kalaimandram rendering service to the public. Yielding to the invitation, Mahatma Gandhi visited the residence of Sri P.S.Kumarasamy Raja, twice on 4,5 October 1927 and 25th January 1935 and stayed on these days. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the Former Prime Minister of India visited Gandhi Kalaimanram twice in 1936 and 1959. Srimathi Indra Gandhi, former prime minister of India also made her visit to this institution on 28.04.59.
