Accomplishments of the MLS Trust The ground on which the MLS Trust was formed is the rich field work and theoretical experience of the Chief functionary of the Trust. She has been a well-known social activist and Founder -Head of the first statutory women’s studies department in Tamil Nadu Universities. The focus of the MLS Trust is on various underprivileged sections of the community. The following are the accomplishments within its formative period Education : In collaboration with the WorldTeach, Harvard University, Mass. a module for Spoken English for children from underprivileged families was prepared. Children from Government aided schools were taught Spoken English using native and hi-tech accessories. Almost 60 students have been trained in Spoken English which gave them self-confidence and mainstreamed them. Books, Notebooks and writing materials were supplied to the needy school children every year. The Trust paid School fees, College fees, Examination fees, and Ph.D. Research fees of deserving students. Gave awards to the best students. Health : Medical assistance and medicines were given to the sick and non-affordable people. Linked them with health institutions and professionals for the help needed. The Chief Functionary has worked with Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society. With the help of CDC and the State Government, launched two Best Practices- Red Ribbon Clubs in higher education and AIDS awareness for Self-help Group women in the State. Sanitation : The Trust took up Total Sanitation as its major work. Built Toilet for non-aided school in rural area as these schools were not eligible for sanitation grant. The Chief Functionary worked with the Directorate of Rural Development of the State and UNICEF in promoting sanitation under NBA (Nirmal Bharath Abhiyan) and safe drinking water, water harvesting and SLWM ( Solid and Liquid Waste Management). Under NBA, she prepared Training Manuals, Flip Books, trained officials , District Coordinators and Master Trainers for Doots. Organised awareness programmes for the Self-Help Groups. Women and Child Development : Empowerment of women and development of children is the major forte of Trust activities. The Chief Functionary has carried out national and international projects on women development. That has been of great help to the Trust. Conducted awareness programmes for women on collective power and need for sanitation, health nutrition from natural foods, education for children and reducing malnourishment. Manuals were prepared and training for women on HIV/AIDS, Sanitation training, and health was organized . The chief Functionary is a life time Strategic cell member for SHGs in Tamil Nadu. She was also the President of the “Mutram” journal of women development. Based on 25 years of experience in promoting women entrepreneurship, the Chief Functionary has been guiding women in entrepreneurial initiatives. In the days to come, entrepreneurship will be the major Agenda. Networking with relevant NGOs, Government Organisations and CBOs has been maintained. Coordination has been helpful in Many ways. Research and Reports : A District Human Resource Development Report was recently completed conjointly with an NGO and submitted to the district Planning Commission.
