Major Activities and Achivements

I am an eye surgeon with a M.D. in Ophthalmology from AIIMS working in the field of Community Ophthalmology for over two decades.I have worked as the District Program Manager in the DBCS from 1995 to 2000 in the District of Darjeeling where I facilitated in performing 3000 cataract operations per year in the district with the help of NGOs.I helped conduct school eye screening programs and provided free spectacles for poor children. I helped maintain a blind register for all the villagers in the District so that it was possibe for NGOs to do community based rehabiltation work for the blind. I helped to screen blind children in the blind school wherin some were found to be partially sighted hence low vision aids and opereation helped them to a certain extent. I gave lectures to the people gathetred during eye camps so that they may become aware about primary eye care and bring their near ones for treatment rather than letting them be as they are thinking their blindness to be Gods curse for something they had done in their previous lives.I talked to them about eye donation and many pledged their eyes in the nearby eye banks. It was the inefficiency of the eye banks to function well that has caused eye donation to be a pathetic movement here. For my work I was awarded the West Bengal Voluntary Health Association Award For Excellence in 2005.
