COUNCIL FOR HEALTH EDUCATION AND RURAL Major Activities and Achivements

Council for Health Education and Rural Upliftment(CHERU) was established in 1987 with the vision of Creating conducive environment to enable the rural and disadvantaged communities towards social and economical development. Women development programmes 525 women SHGs, Panchayat Level and Block Federation of women groups in Vadamadurai block in Dindigul district with the support and guidance of Tamilnadu Corporation for Development of Women Ltd. All the women SHGs organized by CHERU have been linked with financial institutions like banks, RMK to mobilize financial resources to initiate income generation activities. So far Rs.1,75, 00,000 has been mobilized for IGP and their repayment is 100% HEALTH With the support of Ministry of Health and family Welfare, CHERU established 15 bedded Mahatma Rural Hospital for the health care of rural communities. Conducting deliveries, treating minor ailments, counseling, organizing health camps, testing for critical situation are the services provided to 18000 rural people per year with their nominal costs of contribution. CHERU has organized rallies, campaigns by organizing the students and youths on HIV/ AIDS prevention and interventions in Salem and Dindigul Corporation. Awareness and training programmes to the industrial workers of the spinning mills in Dindigul district was implemented with the support of TANSACS and 1234 workers were benefited. Water shed development programmes With the support of District Rural Development Agency of Salem,dindigul,Namakkal and CAPART The organization has implemented watershed development programmes in 70 watersheds of Dindigul, Namakkal and Salem districts. Through our motivation and approach ,all the watershed works are implemented with the planning and participation of the community and the water table and the yield rate are increased considerably by adopting sustainable agricultural techniques Integrated Tribal development programmes with the support of KKS, Germany, CHERU has been implemented integrated developmental programmes for the welfare and sustainable livelihood of the tribal communities through SHG formation, capacity building, Income generation units, Resource base on Forest Produces and health care services for tribal women, adolescents, children and community people.375 families incrased their income by 40%. 4464 individual house hold toilets in Melur,namakkal,Cumbam and Athoor municipalities.Melur municipality was announced as the first scavenger free town in the country, where the organization has constructed 1400 house hold toilets. In support with Tamilnadu Urban Development Programme, CHERU conducted Awareness Campaign, training programmes, Exhibition and exposure visits. This programme is being implemented in 76 habitations of above 10 municipalities and in Salem Corporation and in Tiruchengodu,Namakkal Kumarapalayam Hosur andMettur Municipalities.Our organization is also providing free consultancy services for construction of low cost latrine in rural and urban areas CHERU has organized campaigns to conserve the natural resources and environment on solid waste management, biodiversity conservation, climatic change with the support Ministry of Environment and Forests of Government of India. CHERU has organized a number of awareness seminar, workshops and training by highlighting various features of New Panchayat Raj Systems with the support of , Gandhigram Rural UniversityPRIA, New Delhi CAPART to the elected representatives ,Youths and Women
