AchieveMents: Late Dr. Mar Joseph Kundukulam, former Archbishop of Thrissur and the founder director Msgr. Dr. Joseph Vilangadan had the mission and vision to establish a rehabilitation centre for mentally ill people. They had strongly felt that service to the mentally ill people is an integral mission of the society. The institution named St. Joseph mental health care home was started on16th August 1993 to help the poor mentally ill people with empathetic attitude. It was registered as charitable organization under the Travancore-Cochin Literacy, Scientific and charitable Societies Registration Act X11 of 1955[Reg.No.258/94]). At present 126 residents and about 10000 mentally imbalanced persons out side are getting service from this organization belonging to different cast, creed, and religion. Most of the residents are taken to here by the police people characterized by those who wandering on the street and from the existing government mental hospital. Since many of the beneficiaries of this rehabilitation center are orphans and the others from different charitable institutions True to the fact that we could proudly inform you that by the last year, we could improve the quality of care and rehabilitation with systematic approach to our beneficiaries and could help them to lead a life with dignity and respect. We could help the beneficiaries to grow from a feeling of no worth to a feeling of worth; from incompleteness to completeness; from insecurity to security; from irresponsibility to responsibility; from closeness to openness; from no destined to destined; from unloved and unlovable to loved and lovable. We provide emotional security in a loving, kind considerate and warm approach. We help the beneficiaries with empathetic understanding. We strengthen our beneficiaries’ confidence by a favourable and positive attitude. We help the beneficiaries to become realistically aware of their human exigencies. The organization aims to give better treatment, to increase their standard of living, to improve their ability, to empower them to be self reliant in all respects. We support our beneficiaries with the following aims  to give better treatment  to increase their standard of living  to improve their ability  to give more care & concern  to maintain their sense of person  to improve their interaction & communication abilities  to improve their leadership skills  to feel wanted and useful  to have their self-esteem boosted  to give &receive love  to have sense of being respected by self-society and God The organization itself has lot of activities to enable the residents to live meaningfully. According to their ability we formed the whole group into four. Every group has a promoter and group leader. The group members will be changed once in four months. Every day their promoter evaluates the group members individually and they will be given points according to their contribution. The Social Workers make assessment about each and every beneficiary and evaluate their progress both in their behavior and in their mental condition. Each and every individual beneficiary is given personal care and support by personal approach and individual assessment. We look at the abilities of our beneficiaries, not the disabilities. To convert disability into ability we have the activities of vocational training, psychotherapies occupational therapies, celebrations, annual picnic, sports, arts, games, and cultural competitions.
