Major Activities and Achivements

All Bengal Womens Union has been working with the poor and distressed women and children for nearly 82 years. It is one of the oldest NGOs in Kolkata working for the distreesed, disadvantaged women and children as well as survivors and those who are potentially in moral danger. It campaigned for the passing and implementation of the Bengal Suppression of Immoral Traffic Act and became a rare platform of consensus, bringing together British and Muslim women along with the Hindu and Brahmo elite. It has been providing shelter, care and nutrition, counselling, education, vocational training, restoration and repatriation, rehabilitation and legal assistance to disadvantaged women, children and infants. ABWU has shelter homes viz. Infant Project,J.J. Act Home for children and adult girls, Swadhar Project and Old Age Womens Home. ABWU also provides shelter to victims of domestic violence. It has educational units such as Balwadi Creche, Primary School upto class VI and Special Education Class. For those adult girls who have no education, there is an Adult Literacty Class. It has Vocational Trainings Units viz. Cooking and Canteen, Block Printing, Weaving, Tailoring, Knitting, Bakery, Spice Grinding and Zari work. Apart from providing education, ABWU provides extra-curricular activities for the children viz. Karata, Yoga, Singing, Classical Dancing, Art and Craft, Excursions, etc. ABWU follows the Child Protection Policy. ABWU ensures that all girls and children in its care should have education and encourages the children to continue with their education. However, in cases where the children are unable to cope with education, it ensures that the children undergo vocational training. Apart from in-house vocational trainings, the girls also take training outside the ABWU premises like General Nursing and Midwifery Training, Ancillary Nursing Training, House-keeping Training in renowned Hospitals and Hotels, Para-medical Training as well as sale attendants in Shopping Malls. As a result of the aforesaid, All Bengal Womens Union has continued to expand and is still expanding encompassing women and children in difficult circumstances.
