Arunachala Animal Sanctuary and Rescue Shelter Key Issues and Operational Areas, Major Activiities & Achivements

Operational Districts: Tiruvannamalai

Operational States: TAMIL NADU

AchieveMents: Within a field of love, our Staff of 20 plus three full time veterinary doctors, using traditional and alternative medicines, lift suffering from over 5000 homeless dogs, thousands of owner dogs, and thousands of other animals. The core of our Work is demonstrative love. Our belief is that deep healing only takes place if a creature feels safe, cared for, and loved. When we first opened in 2007, there were over 5,000 homeless dogs and the stray population was out of control. With no small animal vet within 75 kms, no treatment facility, rabies, and widespread abuse, there was unbounded misery. There were perhaps 350 suffering and dying animals on the streets / mostly dogs and puppies, but monkeys, cows, and others, too. It was one of the worst situations I have seen. Today, it is very different. The most important thing that has happened is that the relationship between the homeless animals and the people amongst whom they live day in, day out has been transformed. And the lives of these creatures has been profoundly uplifted. One can experience the change by walking on the streets. Each year, street conditions get better and better, and Tiruvannamalai is perhaps the only municipality of size in the Nation where this has happened. The Animal Welfare Board of India in a public letter of endorsement has said, we are one of the very best in the Nation. We have 7 major programs. A sterilization/anti-rabies program. A clinic. Hospital facilities. Sanctuary, if an animal cannot make it on its own. And adoption program. 24/7 emergency rescue. Hospice. Since opening we have sterilized 6,296 dogs. Given 11,933 anti-rabies injections. Had 36,108 visits to our clinic. Given 102,548 in-patient treatments. Had 3,652 emergency rescues. Found good homes for 844 puppies/dogs. Treated 3,259 animals other than dogs. Our mission is to lift suffering from the Animal Realm. We will treat any animal in need. Large. Small. Wild. Domestic. Most of our services are free.
