KOLKATA NANDANIK Key Issues and Operational Areas, Major Activiities & Achivements

Operational Districts: Birbhum, Hugli , North Twenty Four Parganas, South Twenty Four Parganas, Kolkata

Operational States: WEST BENGAL

AchieveMents: KOLKATA NANDANIK started its journey on 1st April, 1984. For almost twenty-nine years its relentless effort has been to bridge the gap between the common man and the artists and the world of art. All these long years our ceaseless effort has been to make people culture conscious. We have tried to organize art exhibition not in any particular gallery or place, but within the reach of common people. And success has increased our self-confidence and daring. As a result of this we have arranged for art exhibition and art workshops on footpaths and open spaces, places where common men frequent and have easy access. Many eminent artists and painters (like Bijan Choudhury, Prakash Karmokar, Ganesh Halui, Ganesh Pyne and so on) have taken part in such programs, and simultaneously we have received liberal praise, love, warmth and co-operation from one and all. Not being content with this, we have endeavored to make our progress enlivened with new thoughts and ideas. We started our activity with emphasis on the social aspects. Consequently, we held poster exhibition and painting exhibition in various districts of West Bengal. We also arranged for an art exhibition (sculpture and painting) in Lalit Kala Akademi by way of encouraging young artists. Our theme was contemporary issues we tried to enter the depths of human psyche through experimental forms. Within our limited resources we have often tried to bring world renowned artists from both Bangladesh and West Bengal together, and make them participate in art exhibitions and workshops, which have now become a regular annual event. With the aim of making the common man aware of the world of art - to develop his sense of morality and humane values we, after some deliberation, published a magazine dealing with the subject of fine arts. Nandanik Samoy, the effort of a small organization has made its mark within the intelligentsia. Such a magazine dealing only with the subject of art is rare and singular. Madhubani art is an aboriginal art form. To make this art popular in the city, we arranged for and conducted training camps for this purpose. This has given much satisfaction to the art lovers. This organization has developed itself unfailingly to many a social cause - to prevent the wastage of drinking water and that of environmental pollution, to maintain communal harmony and to oppose separatism. It is our constant endeavor to give the underprivileged children and economic footing and to kindle a sense of social awareness in the young generation of today. We have always tried our best to make the world of the young lively and colorful through observance of Rabindranath Tagore’s birth anniversary, Matri Bhasa Dibas (Vernacular Day), educational excursions and conducting theatre workshops and plays enacted by children, and through Prabhat Pheri (singing of awakening songs in procession). We conduct continuously special training program on commercial art, Fabric art on cloth, craft work etc. We are committed to continue all these in the coming years also.
