AchieveMents: Mokshda PEVSS is an ISO 9001:2000 certified non-profit charitable NGO registered under the Societies Registration Act 1860. We have been engaged in energy and environment conservation activities under the aegis of the Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF) since last 17 years. One of our major thrust areas of work is introduction of energy efficient wood based cremation system in the hitherto neglected cremation sector. With our extensive surveys and public contact programs at more than 1100 cremation grounds and a focused research and development programme, we have developed energy-efficient and environment-friendly Mokshda Green Cremation System (MGCS). MGCS operates traditionally on wood and is capable of reducing wood consumption up to 75% as compared to the conventional method of cremation. It also helps in minimizing air and water pollution. As a result of much lesser wood burning MGCS helps stabilizing GHG emissions from cremation sector. The technology has been supported by MoEF and a number of local bodies across the country. A GEF project of 60 units of MGCS for 10 important cities of India has also been approved with cost sharing in the ratio of 30:60:10 amongst GEF/UNDP, MoEF and concerned local bodies respectively. Public awareness mainly through schools and colleges is another focused area of Mokshda PEVSS. An activity viz. School and College Awareness Programme on Environment (SCAPE) was started in 2005. A large number of schools of Delhi and NCR and Mumbai have been covered under this programme. Topics related to various aspects of environment and energy conservation, screening of related documentary films, exhibitions, painting and drawing competitions, debates, etc. are the main activities taken up under SCAPE. Participation in India International Trade Fair (IITF), New Delhi in collaboration of the Ministry of Environment & Forests, is another regular activity focused at sensitizing and educating public about the government conservation programmes of rivers and lakes and how with peopleââ¬â¢s participation such programmes could be made sustainable. Mokshda PEVSS has been regularly organizing mega events like the World Environment Day (June 5) and the International Earth Day (April 22) to sensitize students and public about the latest developments in the field of energy and environment conservation. A Souvenir containing articles from eminent writers and environmentalists, students, teachers, etc. is released on the occasion of the World Environment Day. The Souvenir is widely circulated amongst central / state government departments and organizations, urban local bodies, reputed NGOs, schools and colleges across the country. A number of plantation drives have been organized by us in collaboration with Environment and Forests Departments of State Governments and various public / private enterprises. The last programme under this activity was active participation in the drives organized by the Department of Environment, Government of Delhi at Garhi Mandu on the occasions of the World Environment Day and the International Biological Diversity Day. Chief Minister, Delhi steered both these programmes. A project for plantation of 1000 trees in Gurgaon in collaboration with a private sector company is to be started shortly. The other areas where Mokshda PEVSS has been working are sustainable sewage treatment systems with public-private partnership, sustainable municipal solid waste management, ground-water recharge and rain-water harvesting, recycling of waste water, public awareness programs and use of IT in environment protection and monitoring activities.
