AchieveMents: Nature Environment & Wildlife Society is committed to protect and conserve wildlife ecology and environment since more than a decade NEWS is also committed to engage people in alternative and sustainable livelihood those who are mainly dependent on threatened ecosystems and to enrich their participation in the conservation process The organization simultaneously aims at creating awareness among the masses to fulfill the mission of conservation NEWS is a registered non-profit organization, funded by a wide range of Indian and International donors From a small beginning initially in the year 1991 it has been slowly but steadily growing as a research based organization in Kolkata to cater the complex need of biodiversity conservation and village people socio economic up gradation Our publications on environment and wildlife are well documented NEWS is publishing a quarterly journal ENVIRON on environmental issues science 1993 NEWS works in collaboration with the state government to conserve and protect the natural resources and wildlife by conducting several research projects and training programmes organized periodically followed up every year respectively NEWS has conducted various Wildlife Conservation Projects with species that are of highest concern such as Bengal Tiger Clouded Leopard Hodgson Flying Squirrel Himalayan Newt Bengal Folican Indian Pangolin Gangetic Dolphin Estuarine Crocodile Olive Ridley Turtle Indian Wolf Lesser Cats species turtle species and amphibian species in the landscape of North Bengal as well as South Bengal mainly comprises of Sundarban area NEWS has also carrying out other conservation and livelihood projects respectively such as Impact assessment of changes in water use and water quality on aquatic flora of east Kolkata zone prepared a manual on life size foot print with necessary parameters of Indian mammals Livelihood projects conducted in Sundarban Mangrove restoration project through community participation Benchmark studies on status of Sundarban Mangrove forests Livestock up gradation project in Buxa Tiger Reserve and many more NEWS also building resilience of the coastal communities of Bhitarakanika Odisha through increased livelihood security at Dangamal and Khamarasahi village in Dangamal Gram Panchayat Rajnagar Block Kendrapara District Odisha The main objectives are existing livelihoods of coastal communities around Bhitarkanika strengthened through integration of climate smart adaptations and strengthening the governance and management in the Bhitarakanika eco sensitive zone NEWS has won Earth Care Award 2016 under category III community based mitigation and adaptation in water resources agriculture forestry and other land use Nature Environment and Wildlife Society NEWS initiative of engaging vulnerable communities has promoted mangrove regeneration restoration and reforestation community nurseries of threatened species sustainable agricultural and low carbon practices This initiative builds capacities of communities to deal with the challenges posed by Climate Change Earth Care Awards recognize the efforts of Stewards Community and its leaders Government Agencies and the NEWS team for successfully demonstrating livelihood based climate change adaptation model Some of the sponsors donors of NEWS are Earthwatch UK World Bank through ICZM Livelihood Paris IUCN LGP DST Department of Forest WB RBS Foundation India WHO India British High Commission Kolkata Department of Environment Gov of West Bengal GOIUNDP etc
