Samaritans Assembly Key Issues and
Operational Areas, Major Activiities & Achivements
Operational Districts: South Twenty Four Parganas, Kolkata
Operational States: WEST BENGAL
AchieveMents: SAMARITANS ASSEMBLY works mainly with the people living in slums of the Borough for their basic needs and rights. So far it is a self-financed organization drawing support from individual donors. It is associated with the programs like education, health, women rights and organizes events for building awareness. It recently started working with the people of similar socioeconomic background from nearby area of Maheshtala Municipality.
The organization runs non-formal education centers at Dock Junction, Brace Bridge and Khalbari just beside the Kolkata Dock & Port Area, which is one of the highly congested and densely populated slums of Kolkata and one centre in Solobigha community in Maheshtala Municipality. The children of the slums under the age group of 6-14 are benefitted from these centers and are getting into mainstream schools. The total 212 children are attending these centers and 4 (four) trained and dedicated teachers are guiding them and in which 3 teachers are dedicating their time honorary. The children after completion of the course in these centers get into mainstream schools to continue their formal education. We are also in the process of follow up so that there are not jump down of the school again.
Samaritans Assembly also run a backup support centre for those who found week in study and do not have study space at their home and by this innovative idea the week children has upgraded the education status in their school. We have arranged educational kits for the 84 (eighty four) mainstreamed children from our beloved well-wisher Lioness Club.
The organization runs regular health check-up camps for the children where doctor examine on a regular basis and the children who are found to have problems like lack of vitamins calcium, skin disease, abdomen pain, ENT, worm, sight problems etc. are treated. Necessary cases were referred to the Govt. hospital for further treatment. During the check- up medicines were provided. Doctors are also taking sessions on health and hygiene in the community with the children and their families. We would like to add here that check-up of children in each centre could not be organized due to financial crunch during the year.
An energetic group of women is the pillar of Samaritans Assembly who is playing the vital role in its program. With the help from the organization they are spreading the importance of children education, women empowerment and stopping violence against women. They meet from time to time and discuss on the issues like nutrition education, health & hygiene, birth control, thrift policy, rights violation against women etc. Samaritans Assembly arranges expert support to reduce their violation of basic rights.
Indoor and Outdoor activities with children, Excursion and Sport Meet on Annual Basis. Children Day, Independence Day, Teachers Day are being observed for the all round development.
