Operational States: MAHARASHTRA

AchieveMents: The activities were initiated in 1987 in 22 villages in Jaoli taluka of Satara district in Maharashtra state. The period from 1987 to 1995 was dedicated to rehabilitation of families who had foregone their lands in Koyna dam. The activities were aimed at confidence building as well as undertaking measures for economic upliftment such as dairy development and agriculture development. The field insights gained affirmed women’s empowerment as a thrust right from the initial stages of the organization. Another crucial strategy adopted was channelizing the government schemes for the real needy whereby dissemination about the government schemes was undertaken for the needy and eligible, and proactive initiatives were undertaken to link these 2. The second phase begun with registration of Shramik as a formal entity. This phase spans from years 1995 to 2005. A salient characteristic of this phase was fostering of various community organizations such as cooperatives so that they become the vibrant nodes of community mobilization and transformation. Intense capacity building measures were planned and undertaken for the community organizations which were in the form of women’s Self-Help Groups, Farmers’ Cooperatives, tribal’ cooperatives, etc. The third phase (2005- till date) was characterized by strengthening of these community organisations and their empowerment. The focus on women’s empowerment was bolstered further through legal awareness (for example- Domestic Violence Act, Pre Conception, Pre Natal Diagnostic Technique (PCPNDT) Act) and specific livelihoods projects for them which can result in betterment of their health too (such as manufacturing of low cost sanitary napkins). This phase also saw strengthening of the environmental initiatives. Another important facet was reinforced emphasis on tribal development which lead to initiation of the organization’s work in one of the most impoverished tribal areas in the country- Jawhar taluka in Thane district. Moreover, there were efforts to replicate the concept in greater geographical canvass furthering the work in greater number of villages and area- which included, apart from Thane district, Raigad district in Maharashtra. • Vision and Mission Statement of Organization Vision: Basic necessities of all the populations are fulfilled so that everybody, especially the deprived populations, will have a life of dignity.
