St. Teresaââ¬â¢s College (Autonomous) Ernakulam, Kerala, a pioneering institution committed to the cause of higher learning of women and their empowerment, was established on 15th June 1925 by the Carmelite Sisters of St. Teresa under the leadership of the visionary foundress Mother Teresa of St. Rose of Lima. This minority institution, the first Government aided Womenââ¬â¢s College in the State of Kerala, is an Arts and Science College affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam.
As of 2016-17, the college has 25 departments offering 23 UG programmes, 17 PG programmes, 1 UG diploma, 3 PG diploma, 3 MPhil and 6 PhD programmes. There are 27 research guides, 115 research students and 38 sponsored projects during the period of report. The Womenââ¬â¢s Study Centre, Teresian Institute of Computer Studies, Continuing Education Centre of Govt. of Kerala, IGNOU study centre and International Language Centre offer 28 Add-on courses imparting job skills to the students. The ââ¬ËCentre for remediation of Learning Difficulties and Communication Disordersââ¬â¢ renders services to children with learning disability. Situated in the heart of the city of Kochi, the College has 3130 students, 187 teaching faculty and 57 non-teaching staff at present. The institution has developed cross-border and trans-border tie-ups with London Metropolitan University, U.K, Deakin University, Australia and Normal University, China.
Teresian Research and Consultancy Cell (TRACC) of St. Teresaââ¬â¢s College formed in 2011 to coordinate and promote research activities of the institution. The Research and Development Department for St. Teresaââ¬â¢s College aims at initiating high quality research for the promotion of innovative thinking and for the development of the society in general.
Apart from academics due care is given to foster the artistic talents of the students. The College won the overall championship at the Mahatma Gandhi University Youth Festival of 2016 for the 6th time consecutively. Students are encouraged to join the NSS, NCC and Red Cross so that they may contribute in a meaningful way to national development and the society. Due importance is given to the field of sports and efforts are taken to explore the abilities and enhance the physical fitness components of the students for healthful living and sports performance. Teresian Rural Outreach Programme [TROP], a unique endeavour of the college, is an extension activity aimed at reaching out to the marginalized and underprivileged.
This 91 year old institution has been the recipient of several awards and honours over the decades, the outstanding one among them being the prestigious R. Sankar Award for the Best College in the State, by the Government of Kerala, which was conferred on the college four times subsequently from 1995.
Accredited by NAAC at Five Star Level in1999 and Reaccredited in the 2nd Cycle with A level in 2006, and in the 3rd Cycle with A level and a CGPA of 3.40 in 2012, the St. Teresaââ¬â¢s College was bestowed ââ¬ÅCollege with Potential for Excellenceââ¬Â status by the U.G.C in 2010 and granted Autonomous status in June 2014.
