Vikas Bharthi Key Issues and Operational Areas, Major Activiities & Achivements

Operational Districts: Chittoor

Operational States: ANDHRA PRADESH

AchieveMents: The organization was started with a mission to make women lives to be better and empower women to achieve self respect and self reliance, especially in the Indian context. Most of the Indian women are facing ill treatment from the home to work place and all other platforms. Thus the organization with a view to empower women and started by the women and working for the women, especially in rural and semi urban areas, where the female literacy is very low and female participation and decision making also very low. The organization started for a collective effort with a legal back up to take up the activities for the women in the year 1997 by seven similar visionary women and the same team are continuing till date. Major Activities of the Organization The organization is working for the women in the rural and semi urban areas of Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh in India. The major role of the organization is to empower women through economic, social and political processes. Awareness creation, collective action, microfinance, skill building, natural resource management, promotion of SHGs and health care are the major activities of the organization. Besides, to promote women participation in the decision making in the family and elsewhere are also concern of the organization. The organization is taking every avenue to promote women self respect which leads to self reliance. The organization is taking care of the women participation in natural resource management, especially with the traditional and indigenous medicinal plants where Indian women are well versed with contextual knowledge. Thus, we promoted medicinal plants by some of the women which is giving good impact on the fronts of health aspects of women. We are also providing skill based trainings such as tailoring, agarbathi making, arya work to upgrade as well as to learn market oriented skills among the women to accept income generating activities. Besides, we are promoting entrepreneur skills as well as money management skills for those women who are accepting income generating activities. We are facilitating with the formal financial institutions such as banks for financial linkage to the SHGs to promote financial resources to start any income generating activity. The following are the three major activities : 1. Promotion of Self Help Groups with women to promote collective action. So far we promoted 60 SHGs and trained to exert the collective action in S.R.Puram, Katika Palli, Oddupalli, Gangammagudi and Pilligundla Palli villages of S.R.Puram and Veduru Kuppam mandals of Chittor district, A.P. The groups also include minorities like muslims and disabled. 2. Provided skill based trainings to promote income generation activities among the women, as the economic empowerment is one of the critical step in the empowerment process. Thus, with the support from CAPART, Govt. of India the organization conducted computer literacy program, tailoring, arya work (designer sarees –women’s wear), agarbathi making for self employment of the women and to get rid of economic dependency. Awareness is one of the critical issues for the well being of women on health fronts. Thus, especially on HIV/AIDS the organization organized women health camps and awareness camps to enlighten around 1200 women. This initiative promoted better health status among the women and it also sensitizes on the way to lead by the women. The camps are also focused on adolescent girls, either in the school or out of school.
