ASHOKNAGAR NATYAANAN Key Issues and Operational Areas, Major Activiities & Achivements

Operational Districts: Kolkata

Operational States: WEST BENGAL

AchieveMents: NATYAANAN (The Face of Theatre) was established as a there group in Kolkata, India, in 1989. NATYAANAN is an aware theatre group that believes theatre to be instrumental in bringing about social change and upholding ethical values. Consequently, “correctness of thought” is the thriving force of the group. NATYAANAN desires to change the face of Bengali Theatre through its dogged efforts to fight against all odds to keep producing good, total, socially and politically meaningful, humane theatre. We want to ensure the survival and good health of Bengali theatre in climate where people are increasingly living life vicariously through the virtual realities of television and the internet. NATYAANAN remains rooted in the real, tied to all that is relevant to our human condition. To promote proper culture , we do workshop & production of theatre with street children , childrens of red light area.Apart from theatre WE also organize workshop of mime ,painting, patachitro( a rural Bengal art form ), clay modeling etc. with childrens of different section of society through out west Bengal. As another form of culture we also work with street theatre groups. We also organize street theatre festival in different parts of Bengal. We are now working on ATS(Alternative Theatre Space) theatre. Usually unconventional space Is the point of interest. To expand this thought to rural Bengal we do shows in villages of Bengal. During these years we have produced and staged around thirty plays (full length) , and staged around atleast 500 times in different parts of Bengal and India. The plays we staged ,are written by local, national & internationally acclaimed writer like :Monoj Mitra, Utpal Dutta, Indrashis Lahiri, Dayal Saxena, William Shakespeare, Anton Chekov, Bertolt Brechet, Eugene O”Neill and many others. In the year 1999, we got an opportunity to work with 5(five) EQUITY ACTORS of U.S.A with a cooperation of TISCH SCHOOL OF THE ARTS.
