AchieveMents: APSA has been working on Child Rights and Child Protection since 1981 through institutional and outreach projects. The organization runs open shelters for children in distress, homes for young adults and trafficked girls, a youth skill training institute and a non-formal school – all serving poor urban slum communities, in particular women and children. There are community-based projects to help migrant labourers, children, youth & women in slums through social, cultural and economic activities. Of APSA’s staff, 75% are women with experience in work with children and youth. Among other organizational achievements of APSA are: 1) Member of ICPS Society for Karnataka state; presence on Child Welfare Committee of Bangalore district since 2009 2) Member of Drafting Committee of 8 NGOs involved in drafting the State child protection policy in educational institutions, and girl child protection policy 3) Open shelter ‘Nammane’ awarded best child-friendly institution in the state (2012) 4) One of the NGOs running a shelter home and rehabilitation centre for adolescent girls and survivors of abuse in Bangalore city 5) Accompanies 2 of the 9 Special Juvenile Police Units, liaison with 39 police stations for more humane treatment of children found in conflict with the law 6) Involved in program to strengthen 15 School Development & Monitoring Committees in government schools in slum areas 7) Undertaken training for 5,000+ police personnel and over 3,000 staff of state government departments on child rights & child protection 8) Member State Committee for Urban Homeless, Right to Education Task Force, Taskforce on Alternative Care for Children Without Parental Care and Hospital-based Collaborative Child Response Unit for Abused Children 9) Member Central Advisory Committees on Child Labour and State Project Society for Eradication of Child Labour (2004-date) 10) Member, Bangalore Urban District National Child Labour Project (NCLP) Society (2008-date) 11) Collaborative partner of Childline India Foundation (1998 – date).
