AchieveMents: Avantha Centre for Industrial Research & Development (Partners in industrial progress for pulp & paper and allied industries since 1983)  A leading research institution having state–of–the-art infrastructure  Recognized by Department of Scientific & Industrial Research, Govt. of India and Punjab Pollution Control Board  A NABL accredited (ISO 17025: 2005) laboratory in chemical and mechanical disciplines (Waste/Effluent water, Pulp & paper, Atmospheric pollution - ambient air and emission from stationary sources)  OHSAS 18001: 2007 certified  Serving indian paper mills, chemical/ enzyme manufacturers and renowned national & multi-national companies  Research programmes sponsored by private companies & govt. agencies  Advanced centre for training & research (recognized by neighbouring universities) ACIRD, a leading research institution working in the area of pulp, paper, environment, chemicals and allied fields, is recognized as advanced centre for training & research by neighbouring universities. The major research activities of the centre are focused on environment friendly processes and products, process improvement/ development, product improvement/ development and pollution abatement and resource conservation. The activities are currently carried out by five research groups: Pulping & Bleaching; Stock Preparation & Papermaking; Coating & Printing; Environment & Resource Management; Nanotechnology and Advanced Biomaterials. The centre having good infrastructure in terms of latest equipment/ instrument and diversified expertise (Science – 16, Engineering – 11, Management – 3, Others – 16) has achieved national renown for its clear focus on pulp & paper research. The major activities of the centre are divided into following four areas: (i) RESEARCH PROJECTS - State-of-the-art facilities for carrying out research projects (ii) CONSULTANCY PROJECTS - Improvement in process/ product and cost reduction through process audit at mills (iii) KNOWLEDGE PROCESS OUTSOURCING (KPO) - Transfer of specialized knowledge and expertise (iv) TESTING & ANALYTICAL SERVICES - Providing testing and analytical services to different industries. In the recent years, we have completed two projects of national importance sponsored by Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India on ‘Utilization of banana stem for papermaking’ and ‘Synthesis of calcium sulphate pigment from industrial waste and its utilization in paper industry’. We are presently working on two DST sponsored projects on ‘Green approach for synthesis of optical brightening agent and its activation for better performance for industrial application’ and ‘Utilization of banana stem juice for renewable energy and value added products’. We are pursuing on four cess funded projects awarded by Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India in the area of pulp and paper. We have also been providing technical services to many overseas organisations like Cargill Inc., USA; Dupont, USA; Imerys Minerals, UK; AB Enzymes, Germany etc. The excellence in infrastructure and expertise in the area of our research has been well recognized. In last five years, we have also provided training by way of research projects to a large number of students of M.Sc. and M.Tech. programmes of neighbouring Universities/Institutes. Two doctoral candidates, one CSIR-JRF and one UGC-Maulana Azad National Fellowship holder, are working full time in our centre and registered for Ph.D. in Kurukshetra University - Kurukshetra and Guru Jambheshwar University of Science & Technology – Hisar, respectively. Some of our employees are also working in our centre as doctoral candidates and registered in IIT Roorkee and Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering & Technology, Longowal.
