AchieveMents: CENTRE FOR GERONTOLOGICAL STUDIES Major Activities and Achievemets I. Origin The Centre for Gerontological Studies (CGS), Thiruvananthapuram was established in 1983 by forward looking social scientists from universities in 5 South Indian States as an international centre for inter-disciplinary studies and research on aging. The major objectives of the Centre are to (a) organize, promote and execute programmes of study and research on aging and generate knowledge that is socially relevant, (b) examine government policies, programmes and legislations that have gerontological bearing and prepare reports that may be useful for policy makers and programme planners, (c) organize and conduct seminars, workshops, symposia and study groups on major issues of population aging, II. Activities 1. Conferences & Seminars organised a). First International Seminar on Population Aging in India. 1985 b). International Congress on Aging, 1996 c). First International Colloquium on the Oldest Old (80+) February, 2009 d) First International Workshop on Human Rights of Older Persons in the Asia Pacific Region with Focus on Health and Wellbeing June 2012. e) International Conference on Elder Dignity and Abuse 2014 f). National Seminar on Empowerment of Women with Focus on Old Women - 1998 g). First National Seminar on Widowhood in India with focus on Elderly Widows 2002 h). First National Seminar on Abuse of the Elderly in India. 2004 j). First National Convention on Older Women with focus on health and well being 2010 k). Several State and Local Level Seminars 2. Training Programme National Institute of Social Defence, New Delhi, “Certificate Course in Basic Issues in Geriatric Care for Supervisors of Old Age Homes”. February-March 2007 Four training programmes for the Govt. of Kerala for Supervisors of Old Age Homes 2015. 4. Kerala State Policy on Older Persons, 2006 This was prepared by CGS 5. Helpline & Counseling The Centre has a Helpline and Counselling Bureau. 6. Current Ongoing Programme Age Friendly Grama Panchayat Programme is being run very successfully with Government support in 6 Grama Panchayats in Kerala as a unique innovative project of CGS with emphasis on bottom-up planning. III. Achievements - National Recognition For outstanding contribution to aging, Government of India SJ&E Ministry conferred on CGS its highest award - The Vayoshreshtha Samman 2009. For significant contribution for senior citizens, CGS Chairman, Dr. P.K.B. Nayar, received the Vayoshreshtha Samman - Life-Time Achievement Award 2014 from Government of India SJ&E Ministry.
