AchieveMents: Introduction to Gotipua Gotipua is a traditional dance form in the state of Odisha inIndia and the precursor of Odissi classical dance. It has been performed in Orissa for centuries by young boys, who dress as women to praise Jagannath and Krishna. The dance is executed by a group of boys who perform acrobatic figures inspired by the life of Radha and Krishna. The boys begin to learn the dance at an early age until adolescence, when their androgynous appearance changes. In the Odia language Gotipua, means "single boy”. Long ago, the temples in Orissa had female dancers known as devadasi (or mahari), who were devoted to Lord Jagannath, which gave rise to Mahari dance. Sculptures of dancers on bas-reliefs in temples in Orissa like Konark Sun temple and Jagannath Temples (Puri) demonstrate this ancient tradition. With the decline of mahari dancers around the 15th century during the reign of Rama Chandra Dev (who founded the Bhoi dynasty), boy dancers known as Gotipua in Orissa continued the tradition. Gotipua dance is a Guru Sisya Parampara system. Today Gotipua dance will be performed by “Guru Maguni Jena Nrutya Parisad, Puri” in which Guru Sri Maguni Jena himself will perform along with his disciples. Under the able supervision of Guru Sri Maguni Jena young boys are given education and trained to become Gotipua dancers and taken care with food and shelter in his Gurukula. Guru Sri Maguni Jena is a disciple of Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra , Guru ramachandra barik, and Guru padmanabha das. He is training Gotipua dancers since last 20 years and trained more than 200 gotipua dancers. His “Guru Maguni Jena Nrutya Parisad, Puri” has performed in many occasions inside India and many countries in abroad such as England, Germany, Italy and many others. Guru Sri Maguni Jena will give vocal with harmonium accompanied by Purnachandra Jena in Pakhaja and Bikram Swain in Kartal. The Gotipua dance will be led by Biswanath Jena with other members Krishna Chandra Biswal, Balia Setti, Tiki Baral, Sumanta Sahu and Sanu Bhatt. The sequence of performance by Gotipuas will be 1: Guru vandana 2: Dasavataram and 3: Bandha dance (acrobatics)
