The production of kharif crops depends by and large on quantum and pattern of distribution of rainfall across the crop season. Accordingly, the crop yields and consequently the production vary considerably with year to year. As the market prices are determined by demand and supply situation, the export trade needs a reliable forecast of production every year coinciding with the commencement of harvesting operations i.e. in the last week of October.
