AchieveMents: About LIGHTS Learning in Geography, Humanities, Technology and Science (LIGHTS) is an NGO established in 2003 as a Society registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. LIGHTS aims to work as a research unit and help create documents and relevant material useful for NGOs and community based organisations in the field of environment and development of India; to be an outreach unit to organize workshops and seminars among stakeholders in several environment and development related activities; to undertake field studies in consultation with Geography and You (G’nY) and Iris Publication, for publication in the before mentioned magazine; promoting education for the girl child living in remote and far flung areas, especially those who are unable to pursue high school education due to poor income of parents, by providing scholarships to them; providing help and assistance to rehabilitate old and retired people; create environmental awareness for better living and circulate free material towards the same; and, creation of a network of teachers/trainers all over the country/world to facilitate interaction for environment related issues. LIGHTS in collaboration with its knowledge partner Geography and You magazine has organised several seminars and conferences. The most famous event titled – ‘International Conference on Science and Geopolitics of Arctic – Antarctic – Himalaya (SaGAAH)’ has been conducted three times. Apart from SaGAAH, LIGHTS Research foundation has organised Data Users Seminar (DUS) based on Geographical Information Systems (GIS) training in Delhi, Dehradun, Ajmer, Nagpur, Tirupati, Mysore and Guwahati. Since 2011, each year LIGHTS conducts Earth Day which is sponsored by Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES). Under this event, several schools are invited to participate in activities such as poster making, slogan making and painting competitions. Prizes are then distributed under primary, junior and senior categories. In March 2010, LIGHTS organised a conclave titled – ‘Delhi Round Table Conclave’. This programme was funded by Ministry of Earth Sciences, National Disaster Management Authority, National Institute of Ocean Technology, Port of Chennai, Indian National for Ocean Information Services and National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research. The conclave aimed to highlight the impact of Climate Change on Ocean & Sea Around India for a Cross Section of Intellectuals, Scientists, Media Persons, School/College Teacher and Meritorious Students. Apart from conducting such events, LIGHTS has developed Girl Child Scholarship and Old Age Rehabilitation Schemes. LIGHTS provide scholarships to girl-children in need for support to prevent them from leaving school due to poor income of parents so that they can attain a minimum educational standard. This programme has already been initiated in the government schools of Bihar. From April 2006 to March 2008, Ms. Khushboo received scholarship of INR 200 each month till she appeared for her 10th standard board examinations. From April 2008 to March 2010, Ms. Ranju Kumari received scholarship of INR 200 each month till she appeared for her 10th board examinations. Old Age Rehabilitation Scheme was propose to help old / retired people to lead a protected and better life after retirement by way of arranging employment (those who are fit to work.
