AchieveMents: NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE ACADEMY (NESA) NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE ACADEMY was established in 1984 by Late Prof. TRC Sinha, its Founder General Secretary and was registered in the year 1988 under the Societies Act XXI of 1960. Presently, its head quarters and office is 206, Raj Tower-1, Alaknanda Community Centre, New Delhi-110019, and registered office at Shiv Puri, Behind A.N. College, Patna 800 023, Bihar. Aims and Objectives Ø To enhance and promote the study of the environmental sciences by encouraging students, scientists, researchers, academicians and members of the Academy for pursuing research on environment and allied areas. Ø To set up Regional/State Chapters for dissemination of information on environment. Ø To motivate and prepare young minds on environmental management. Ø To hold Annual Conference of the Academy. Ø To organise national/international level conferences, symposia, seminars, meetings and workshops on themes of environmental concerns. Ø To publish policy papers, synthesis volumes, proceedings, journals, newsletter, transactions and other publications for the promotion of Environmental Sciences. Various eminent personalities had graced the Academy as its President. The first President of the Academy was Dr. K.C. Bose, Vice-Chancellor of Ranchi University, then Dr. B.S. Attri, Advisor, Ministry of Environment and Forest. Most recently Padmabhushan Dr. S.Z. Qasim was the President of the Academy till June 2015. He was the most renowned marine scientist known for his Antarctica mission in 1981-82. He also served as Secretary of the Deptt. of Ocean Development (now Ministry of Earth Sciences); Member, Planning Commission and Vice-Chancellor, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. Currently Prof. Javed Ahmad, Prof. (Retd. Dean, Faculty of Science), Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi, is the President of the Academy. The Academy has Chapters in almost all the States of the country as well as regional chapters in various countries which support activities of the Academy to promote awareness, research and publications related to environmental issues. Presently, we have chapters in 15 countries, including USA, Canada, Finland, Russia, China, Brazil, Taiwan, Kuwait, etc. It has organised many activities, with financial support from the Ministry of Environment & Forests, Department of Science and Technology, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Indian National Science Academy, Indian Council of Medical Research, Ministry of Earth Sciences, and Department of Biotechnology, regularly for over 28 years. The Academy regularly organises Annual Conferences in prominent centres of India encompassing important topics related to the environment — 24 conferences and symposia on more than 31 topics in different parts of the country. All the Annual Conferences were inaugurated by eminent scientists of the country, Vice-chancellors, Governors, Chief Ministers, Senior Cabinet Ministers of the Union and respective State Governments, etc. Activities such as organisation of Eco-clubs in different Schools of Delhi, Eco-development Camps, celebration of Environment Day and a number of Symposia were organised with the financial support of Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India. The Academy has also organised more than 50 training programmes in different schools of Delhi on Disaster Management, sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. The issue of noise pollution, in particular, was taken up by the Academy that received appreciation from the Government of Delhi which subsequently passed an Act on NOISE POLLUTION. Similarly, the CLEAN AND GREEN DELHI slogan was popularised by the Academy through its various activities and publications. The Academy celebrated its 25th year of its inception by organising an International Conference on Environment and Human Health on November 28-29, 2012 at the Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi. The Conference was inaugurated by Dr. Krishnaswamy Kasturirangan, Member, Planning Commission. In order to bring awareness amongst the masses at the grassroots, the Academy organises activities by DISTRICT ENVIRONMENTAL CENTRES in various districts of the country. More than 45 Centres have already been started and many more are coming up.
