Pancham Vaidic Key Issues and Operational Areas, Major Activiities & Achivements

Operational Districts: Kolkata

Operational States: WEST BENGAL

AchieveMents: The group’s first production, Nathabati Anaathabat, was staged in 1983. The production has received houseful shows whenever staged. Though rare, but this production is staged once every alternate years even now. This play was also performed in Hindi and has got similar accolades. Pancham Vaidic inorder to do something meaningful and creative in the domain of theatre, has set up a theatre institute, Panchamveda Charyashram, a centre to impart training in all aspects of theatre in 1984. Students here learn the language of the body, attempt at experiments with voice and speech, and try to imbibe the idioms of theatre. There are classes on the origin and history of drama as well as elementary science also.We are regularly receiving interested students and there are regular training program conducted round the year to train aspiring future theatre artistes. This training is without any cost to the students. The workshops are lead by eminent personalities from theatre world, spearheaded by Smt Saoli Mitra. The group’s second production, Kathaa Amrita Saman, was produced in January 1990. This play is also adored by Indian intelligentsia and has done regular houseful shows. Even now, on popular demand, we perform this play once every alternate year. We have set up Tripti Mitra Sangrahasala, an archive in the memory of Late Smt Tripti Mitra, doyen of Indian theatre, in 1993. The archive has a collection of her awards, costumes, personal belongings and furniture. Audio cassettes of her interviews, plays and recitations are played on request. Members of Pancham Vaidic are dedicated in maintaining this archive. In 1994, we performed Bitata Bitangsha, followed by plays like Agnimantha, Sujan Bratir Simanta, Antargata Agun and audio plays like Hafiz Miyar Nao. These plays, due to various reasons, are not performed anymore. Our current production are Rajnaitik Hatya (adaptation from Sratre’s Les Main Sales) directed by Saoli Mitra Chandali, by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, acted by Saoli Mitra & Arpita Ghosh in leading roles. Poshu Khamar (adaptation of George Orwell’s Animal Farm) acted by Debatosh Ghosh, Saoli Mitra and 35 other actors on stage. Tokolosh, Narakiya, Ganesh A-parajita – based on 3 short stories of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore on the theme of women power. Ghare Baire, famous political novel written by Rabindranath Tagore to commemorate his 150th birth anniversary acted by Santilal Mukherjee, Debdoot Ghosh and acted/directed by Arpita Ghosh Working on Arthur Koestlar’s Darkness at Noon, planned to staged in August this year. Our current productions are regularly staged in leading auditoriums of Kolkata like Academy of Fine Arts, Rabindra Sadan, Madhusudan Manch, Tapan Theatre, Sujata Sadan, Kalamandir etc. Regularly on an average we are doing 2-3 shows of the above productions every month. Apart from shows in Kolkata, we have invitational performances in other districts of West Bengal and other parts of India such as Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Delhi, Bhopal etc. We regularly take part in Bharat Rang Mahotsava organized by National School of Drama in New Delhi and have got extreme popularity in their festivals. In addition to the above, every year we have our in-house programs to commemorate the birth and death anniversaries of our founder and doyen of Indian thetare Sri Shambhu Mitra & Smt Tripti Mitra. The program is attended by close well wishers of the Group.
