Rural Area Development Trust Key Issues and Operational Areas, Major Activiities & Achivements

Operational Districts: Theni

Operational States: TAMIL NADU

AchieveMents: BACKGROUND OF THE ORGANISATION: The Rural Area Development Trust (RUADT) is a voluntary social service organization exclusively working for the rehabilitation of differently-abled people. It was set up in the village of B. Dharmathupatti in 1991, with the mission of identifying needy differently-abled chil-dren in the surrounding areas (around 10 villages) through awareness about disability and its implications for affected families and individuals. RUADT started its work with only 17 physically challenged children in 1996 (91-93 done basic survey in the Bodi Block and 93 –96 formation of women community and creating aware-ness about woman rights), providing basic amenities like foods, clothes, free medical treatment, transport, physiotherapy, and surgery. All these services were provided on, the surveyed need basis and are aimed at enabling the children to participate in community life and attend formal schooling. In 1997, RUADT started the Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) Programme for per-sons with disabilities in rural areas. The programme was supported by German Doctor’s Commit-tee, Germany from 1997 to 2001, where 217 differently-abled persons (persons with disabili-ties including differently-abled children) were benefited by the CBR programme. An additional 619 individuals and their families were reached in another 28 villages with support from the CBR Forum, Bangalore. In 1999, the Miriam Dean Trust, U.K supported the RUADT’s differently-abled children programme, to which a programme for mentally challenged and Spastic Cerebral Palsy children was added, that included a strong focus on parents’ participation. In 2002, RUADT implemented the NPRPD (CBR) programme for the Department of Disa-bled Rehabilitation of the Government of Tamil Nadu in Bodinayakanur Block of Theni District. One MRW (Multi Rehabilitation Worker), 50 CBR employees, and 2,525 people with disabilities were involved in this programme. In 2004, we implemented a Day Care Centre at Uthamapalayam named Manjari Day Care Centre. The programme was supported by Nandri help for South India, Switzerland Home based rehabilitation programme was also supported by Nandri which opened doors for about 60 chil-dren. In 2005, Kamarajar Day Care centre was established to identify the children aged 0- 6 years affected by brain damage and growth retardation. After identifying the children, the EIC Rehabilitation treatment plan was discussed with our rehabilitation professionals according to the impairment. The treatment of Early Intervention centre includes Physiotherapy, Occupa-tional therapy, Special Education, Sensory integration and Play Therapy. In 2008, we replaced Kamarajar Day Care Centre to Pushparani Children’s Village which became permanent now. The Early intervention centre capacitates 50 – 65 children. The thera-py treatments, food and transportation charges are provided free of cost. Now the centre is elevated to special school and vocational training centre.
