AchieveMents: Thakur Hari Prasad Institute of Research and Rehabilitation for the Mentally Handicapped was founded by (late) Dr. Thakur V. Hari Prasad on16/09/1968. THPI is a professionally managed premier voluntary organisation grown over 48 years on the firm foundation of a multidisciplinary approach to rehabilitation of persons with mental handicap since inception. Its accomplishments encompass many unprecedented initiatives, many sojourns into hitherto untread areas of rehabilitation services. Its philosophy and vision are coherent with its mission and implementation modes. It aims at promoting the quality of life of persons with mental handicap and associated disabilities through a holistic multidisciplinary qualitative service-delivery. The Institute has been accorded special consultative status by United Nations. THPI is recipient of National and International Awards from the President of India & RCI Hong Kong Foundation International and many other awards in recognition of its outstanding performance in the field of Handicapped Welfare. It is the only institute honoured with UGC award. Situated on a campus of five acres with total barrier free environment. Members comprising of Rehabilitation Professionals, Personnel, CBR workers and Administrative staff are involved in the service delivery. The Rehabilitation Professionals include Neuro-paediatricians, Psychiatrists, Clinical Psychologists, Special Educators, Speech Pathologists & Audiologists, Physio Therapists, Occupational Therapists and Medical& Psychiatric Social workers for rehabilitation of Persons with Mental Handicap. It also offers augmentative interventions to supplement therapeutic interventions through Dance therapy, Music therapy, Yoga therapy, Hydro therapy, Multi Media, Games & Sports & Performing arts etc. Training of human resource at different levels, research, advocacy, policy development are some of the other major pursuits of the organisation. Involved in various avenues of operation individually and also in collaboration with many national and international voluntary agencies and government machinery. Its initiatives are unprecedented and cost effective. Developed innovative viable models that have emerged as a result of THPI’s explorations have implications for national level replication. The horizons of the large spectrum of THPI’s pursuits encompass concern for:  Protection of rights of persons with mental handicap and other disabilities in general,  Empowerment of persons with disabilities and their families through access to services access to information and promotion of their participation.  Enhancing the dignity of persons with disabilities through valued approaches and strategies of public education, awareness creation and community participation. Believer of convergence of services and utilizing available manpower and infrastructure resources for mainstreaming the rehabilitation process ranging from prevention of disabilities, early detection, early intervention, education, training, employment and integration into the community. The Service users of THPI belong to all strata of society in Tribal, Rural & Urban areas. The services offered by THPI include Institutional & Community based services. Human Resource Development Programmes : Rehabilitation Science is a growing discipline and there is dearth of Rehabilitation Professionals and Personnel to meet with the demand of Rehabilitation Services in India. Offers Certificate, Diploma, Graduate & Postgraduate level Training Programmes recognised by Rehabilitation Council of India, affiliated to Osmania University, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University.
