AchieveMents: Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre being the one of 2 comprehensive cancer centres in Assam was established in 1996 and administered by the Cachar Cancer Hospital Society, a non-profit registered NGO having 80G exemption and FCRA (Foreign Contribution Regulation Act) status. Gov. of Assam provided land for hospital establishment and subsequent free chemo drugs, grant for pathology, MPLDS scheme funding for infrastructure extension.
The hospital serves an underserved and economically impoverished community of patients from the Barak valley and other districts of Assam state and from the states of Tripura, Manipur, Meghalaya and Mizoram. The hospital sees over 3000 new and about 14000 follow-up patients annually. Gov. of Assam provided land for hospital establishment and subsequent free chemo drugs, grant for pathology, MPLDS scheme funding for infrastructure extension.
Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India sanctioned a grant meant for infrastructure development for promotion of research and diagnostic facilities at the Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (CCHRC) in 2010. DBT Grant secured the establishment of Department of Molecular Oncology to initiate research activities in cancer biology at CCHRC.
We regularly organize conferences, popular lecture and workshops in key areas of cancer research. Students of M.Ch, DNB, MS, PhD, M.Sc, M. Tech and B.Tech program visit our centre round the year for training and skill up gradation. We work with different departments like biotech, social work, mass com of Assam University (A Central University) in areas of molecular epidemiology and preventive oncology. National Institute of Technology, Silchar (NIT) with support from C-DAC has tied up with us for telemedicine facility to expand the horizon of cancer care in rural part of Southern Assam.
The hospital has an active preventive oncology program through which we consistently makes efforts to create awareness on cancer, its causes, prevention and treatment. Awareness programmes, that average about two a week, are organized to reach populations in educational institutions, NGOs, government organizations and villages in different localities. Hospital teams visit different communities, averaging two a month, and conduct screening programmes for cancer in cooperation with local clubs and the panchayats. Screening is usually done for oral, cervical and breast cancer. The hospital organizes programmes like ââ¬ÅNo tobacco month,ââ¬Â ââ¬ÅWorld No Tobacco Day,ââ¬Â ââ¬ÅBreast cancer awareness month,ââ¬Â ââ¬ÅPink ribbon day,ââ¬Â ââ¬ÅInternational day for the elderly,ââ¬Â and ââ¬ÅWorld hospice and palliative care dayââ¬Â as means of enhancing awareness and sensitivity to health related issues and to encourage a healthy lifestyle.
