Operational States: GUJARAT

AchieveMents: UNNATI is a voluntary non-profit organisation registered under the Societies Registration Act (1860) in 1990. It is our aim to promote social inclusion and democratic governance so that the vulnerable sections of society are empowered to effectively and decisively participate in mainstream development and decision making processes. Unnati is an issue based, strategic research and educational support organisation, working with people’s collectives, NGOs, elected representatives in local governance and the government. Collaborative research, public education, advocacy, direct field level mobilisation and implementation with multiple stakeholders are the key instruments of our work. The interventions span from the grassroot level to policy level environment in ensuring basic rights of citizens. In this, inspiration is drawn from the struggles of the vulnerable and strength from our partners. Presently, all the activities are organised around the three thematic areas: 1. Social Inclusion and Empowerment: In partnership with grass root organizations, the rights of the dalits, women and persons with disabilities are promoted. It also invokes the social justice principles in public programs through research and advocacy. The issues of accessibility are addressed, particularly for inclusion of persons with disabilities. 2. Civic Leadership, Governance and Social Accountability: The focus of the program is to strengthen decentralization and promote social accountability. Unnati has been invited by the Government of Gujarat to develop institutional mechanism for state wide social audit of MGNREGA. Unnati also works on improving delivery of public programs by creating demand from community and enabling the government to deliver. 3. Social Determinants on Disaster Risk Reduction: Activities under the theme are undertaken in the desert districts of Rajasthan and Kutch district of Gujarat to facilitate Community Managed Disaster Risk Reduction (CMDRR) practices. Unnati plays a wider educational and advocacy role at the state and national levels, In the year 2015, Unnati has provided technical support to National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to prepare the national Disaster Management plan. It is a member of various networks and forums viz. National Alliance for DRR and Asian Disaster Risk Reduction Network (ADRRN) through which it promotes coordinated action to enhance social inclusion, minimum standards, social accountability and innovations in DRR practices. Unnati is working in partnership with Government of Gujarat in the programme implementation, training, research and documentation. It has collaborated with the Rural Development Department, Panchayati Raj Department, Department of Water Resource and WASMO, Department of Social Justice and Empowerment, Department of Women and Child Development, Department of Education, Tribal Development Department, Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA) and Forest department.
