AchieveMents: Sreevaraham Vanitha Samithi registered on 8th January 1957 under Charitable Endowment Act was founded earlier as ‘Balika Samajam’ in the year 1913 and later started functioning under a duly constituted Board during 1954. Aim of Samithi is comprehensive progress of women and children unfolding the problems pertaining to social, economic, health, educational and in the cultural spheres. Ponnamma Thanu Pillai Charitable Trust is formed with Reg No. 545/82 on 20-10-1982. Samithi by its activities later developed into one of the best women empowerment programme implementing Centres in the State. Apart from health related activities, pre-school education since 1954, craft oriented training programmes , Family planning activities, ‘A’ class Women and Children’s library since 1964, Radio assembling ancillary to Keltron, health clinic for women and children, children’s theatre since 1972 , children’s park and play ground, Children’s museum, dance and music classes, research/training section for studies, seminars, training programmes, pre-primary teachers training, rural extension centre etc. were the earlier activities of Samithi. Vayojanamitram, a day care centre for elderly women aided by Help Age India was functioning here. Studies undertaken – A case study of ancillary unit – Keltron, literary survey of slum colony of Trivandrum, study of street children by UNICEF through IMG, female child in Kerala-acceptance in family, preparation of catalogues of agencies reaching the poorest women of India – for Institute of Social Studies Trust, New Delhi- A CIDA Project, Trivandrum experiment, an ILO sponsored study on TRYSEM, Socio economic programmes for women under Social Welfare Board, and a resource centre for women’s studies and programs, and a guidance wing attached to it. Present activities Samithi works for the overall welfare of women and children. Activities in the area of health awareness through socio economic programmes aimed at the empowerment of women by Seminars/ Conferences are regularly conducted. Ponnamma Thanu Pillai, CBSE school started in the year 1999 with classes from play school to Std IV. Free education is given to 40-50 children every year out of the total of 175. Women and children’s library is affiliated to Kerala State Library Council. Balavedi, Vanitha Vedi and Moving Library are part of Library activities. Skill training programmes like book binding, sewing machine mechanism, fabric painting, mural painting, bag making, soft toy making, metal embossing, soap, detergent and lotion making, Christmas/wedding decorations, thermal cooker making, bead works, wall hangings, cutting tailoring, hand embroidery, computer classes, communicative English, Yoga classes, handicraft work etc are conducted. Awareness programmes for adolescents and women on health, violence against women, waste management, water preservation, legal awareness, energy conservation, use of solar devices, gender sensitization, food preservation, cookery classes are regular activities. Health camps for women, children and public, ayurveda massage, home nursing classes, life skill education for adolescent girls, importance of human values, education and Personality Development classes are conducted. Summer camps conducted for children every year. Programmes conducted mostly with the aid of Central / State Governments, NABARD, MSME, KSUDP, AIWC, JSS, District Industries Centre, IOB, Canara Bank, Food and Nutrtion Board, Swadeshi Grama Vikasana Kendra etc.
