AchieveMents: Mitraniketan was founded in 1956 by K. Viswanathan in Vellanad village in Thiruvananthapuram district in Kerala. It is an educational and social experiment, with programs designed to educate and empower students as well as community members, and to promote rural development. Most of the students and adults whom Mitraniketan serves are members of tribal or historically disadvantaged communities. Mitraniketan’s principles and practices draw from Gandhi and Tagore, as well as Arthur Morgan of the U.S.A. and NFS Grundtvig of Denmark. Its educational mission is to promote the progress of society through the total development of individuals. Following its motto of “Community-centric education in an education-centric community,” Mitraniketan has grown and evolved over the years to develop new ways to meet the needs of its students and community.The following are the milestones of achievements: - It has promoted Literacy activities in the state especially among the tribal communities which also contributed to the development and total literacy of the state. - It has also promoted education among the rural and tribal children leading to formal education among first generation learners. - It has imparted vocational training to a large number of youth and women leading to self and wage employment. - It has promoted village cooperatives in the field of Khadi, Farmers cooperatives, bamboo and reed workers, milk cooperatives, rubber producers’ society etc. - It pioneers in disseminating appropriate technologies especially smokeless oven, bio-gas, low cost building materials, handicrafts, artisanal machineries and tools, water conservation, low cost sanitation etc. - It has improved the local cattle breeds and productivity all over Trivandrum district through artificial insemination programs. - It has disseminated appropriate agriculture technologies form laboratories to farms on a large scale through technology training, On-farm trials and demonstrations. - It has organized women in the villages in the form of self-help groups for empowerment. - A large number of students, teachers and volunteers from India and abroad, utilize the facilities of Mitraniketan for exposure visits, voluntary work, studies and research.
